Ruth Bontrager entered Delbert’s life when she needed an adventurous change from her life in the Amish community of Shipshewana, Indiana. She had been a fabric store manager for a number of years, but was drawn to the beauty of the west. Delbert & Ruth soon met in the Montana Amish community of the West Kootenai, helping in the log home business office. After a few years a friendship grew (some folks claim they saw sparks), Delbert gave up his bachelor ways and was ready to start a new adventure. Loving the west, but missing tasty quality food, the newly married Bontrager’s moved to St. Ignatius to start a community store. The Bontrager's goal was to make available to their neighbors the variety of wholesome food from a traditional Amish family table.
Mission General Store started as a discount grocery store – but quickly added a large deli featuring Troyer Meats & Cheeses, quality Wilcoxson ice cream by the cone, and great made-to-order deli sandwiches with freshly baked bread. You can find Amish quality small batch Mission General Store gourmet Amish quality foods, a large candy section (you can thank Delbert’s sweet tooth), specialty flours & other baking supplies, and a wonderful specialty spice section that would put most big box stores to shame. Recently we have added a produce department that specializes in local produce when it is seasonably available. Mission General Store also has a fine selection of fabric & quilt making supplies, quality cookbooks, Amish crafted rockers, natural bulk foods, freshly ground peanut butter, & Dobson Creek Coffee.
Please stop by to say hello to Delbert & share a recipe or quilting idea with Ruth. Our helpful employees are always ready with a smile & a thank you.
